Art that you fall in love with at first sight

There’s nothing quite like Joanne’s art, probably because there’s no one quite like Joanne. She is as original and authentic as her wonderful creations. I met both one day last month and must confess I am a little bit in love.
Joanne Finnegan came to Switzerland in 2007 as an import from northern England, and since then has been putting her degree in Visual Art to good use. Although she has a fear of heights, one of her favourite subjects is the Swiss mountains, especially Rigi.
As much as I like her paintings, I love her maps even more. She resurrects old Swiss maps by painting the place on the map itself. Her painted map of the Eiger even got her into The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London. That’s how good they are.
And then there are the striking lino cuts, which look like modern versions of Swiss Scherenschnitte (or paper cut artwork). I think I love these most of all, particularly the ones with little appliqué extras like the Swiss flag.
You can see 25 of her paintings and maps at a new exhibition that just opened near Lucerne. It’s in buildings of the Golfpark Holzhäusern but it’s free and open to the public until September. Do go if you have a chance.
If you can’t get there, then you can find Joanne and her art on Facebook, or contact her directly to buy a painting or something smaller. Or you can enter a draw to win the Zug lino cut above (it measures 30×40 cm): just leave a comment below before the end of May.

Looks at first glance like a modern Scherenschnitt. A lovely, playful depiction of Zug, Joanne.
