Win a trip to Jungfraujoch – and more!
November 4, 2013, 73 Comments
Fancy going to the Top of Europe? Or soaking in the thermal baths at Leukerbad? Or lunch at the Grandhotel Giessbach? You can win any one of those in a free prize draw on this website, or via my Facebook and Twitter pages. It’s all to celebrate the official publication of Slow Train to Switzerland today, so of course the prizes are related to Miss Jemima’s journey that I followed in the book. The Slow Train has arrived!
It’s easy to enter online (details below) but before that, here’s what you could win.
Prize number one: Jungfraujoch. Two tickets for the train ride from Interlaken up to Europe’s highest train station. It’s one of Switzerland’s most spectacular railway journeys, climbing up inside the Eiger to come out just beneath the summit of the Jungfrau. Truly a trip to remember! The tickets are valid for two years and were provided by the Jungfraubahn railway.
Prize number two: Giessbach. A day out for two, starting with the boat trip from Interlaken across Lake Brienz, possibly on the beautiful old paddle-steamer that still glides its way over the water. Landing at Giessbach you’ll then progress to the Grandhotel Giessbach for lunch beside the waterfalls. This Belle Epoque gem has been lovingly restored to its former glory. The whole package is valid for a year (but the Grandhotel is open April-October only) and was provided by Interlaken Tourism.
Prize number three: Leukerbad. Two return tickets for the cable car ride up the Gemmi, the highest point Miss Jemima reached on her trip. From the top there’s a spectacular view of the Alps, and if you’re feeling sporty you can walk back down the zigzag path cut into the cliff. Either way, afterwards you can both relax in the hot water of the Alpentherme baths, where you can lie on the bubble beds and look up at the mountains. These tickets to bliss are valid one year and were provided by Leukerbad Tourism.
Prize number four: Slow Train. The first three prizes are really only suitable for people living in Switzerland, or those sure to come in the next year as they don’t include flights or trains to reach the destinations. For those of you living abroad, I can’t offer anything quite as grand but there is a special prize for you: a signed first edition of Slow Train to Switzerland, hot off the press, plus some extra Swiss goodies. There are three prize goody bags so three chances for you to win. And of course postage is included to wherever you are in the world.
Plus, those of you in Switzerland could also win a prize in person if you come to the official launch of the book on 27 November. That’s being held at Stauffacher Bookshop in Bern and there will be a prize draw on the night so you have to be there to win. These prizes are separate from this online competition but are just as exciting and almost the same: Jungfraujoch, Leukerbad and a surprise package in Interlaken. Tickets for the launch can be bought in Stauffacher, although they are free for customer cardholders (but they will still need a ticket to get in).
There are various ways to enter the online competition. Deadline for entries is 30 November:
- leave a comment here, saying which country you live in
- like my Facebook page
- if you’ve liked the page already, then like this post on that page
- comment about this post on my Facebook page, saying where you live
- share this Facebook post on your own page
- follow me on Twitter
- if you already follow me, then tweet about this post, mentioning me
And yes you can do all of the above to increase your chances of winning. The only important thing is to make sure that I know you have entered. On Facebook, I can see all the new page ‘Likes’, the individual ‘Likes’ for each post, who has shared posts and who has commented on them so each of those will be entered into the draw. On Twitter you’ll have to retweet me or copy me in or it will get lost in the Twitter stream.
Please remember that if you’re unlikely to be able to make use of the three Swiss prizes then tell me that you live abroad. Then someone else can win one of the great days out. It’s only fair. I will draw the Swiss prizes first and contact the winners to be sure they can use them. Prizes will be sent out in December.
Don’t forget that there are many events coming up over the next few weeks where you can buy a signed copy of the book. Full details here, but British events are in London, Peterborough, York, and Petersfield while Swiss ones are in Bern, Basel, Zurich, Lucerne, Zug, Nyon and Lausanne.
Thanks to the lovely people at Jungfrau Railways, Interlaken Tourism and Leukerbad Tourism for supplying the prizes. Visit their Facebook pages for more special offers.
Good luck!

I have enjoyed following your blog, and will continue to do so, even though I recently moved to the US from Switzerland. I am sure I will return to visit, as there are people and places there I dearly love.
I am from The USA. I would love to go back to Switzerland for another visit. Had a wonderful visit last year with my parents (celebrating 50 years of marriage).
I live in Scotland but holiday in Switzerland every year (until someone gives me a job so I.can move permanently)! Already read and recommended Swiss Watching would live any of the prizes but particularly Jungfraujoch as I lived in Wengen and Interlaken as a student and never quite made it to the top due to cost! Merci vielmal!
Well, it doesn’t matter if I will win anything here! I life near all these breath taking places, means, I’m a winner anyway!
I’m originally from Switzerland but live in the USA. I love to go back home and visit….
Despite living in Switzerland, I have never been to Jungfraujoch! I would love to visit this incredible place!
Such a lovely country. Would love to go back and see more. I’m in Lincolnshire, England so such a massive contrast of scenery
I live in Canada after 13 years in Switzerland. Missing it though 🙂
I have been living in Switzerland for 14 years and truly enjoy train rides!
Are there any Slow train to Switzerland launch events planned in Ticino?
Hi Sarah. There will be but not this side of Christmas. Two dates are planned in late January and late March and once I have the confirmed details, they will be up on the website. Hope to see you there.
Thanks a lot Diccon! Looking forward!
I live in the USA but will be returning to CH next summer and plan to stay in Leukerbad and visit Jungfraujoch.
Looks like you qualify for the three main prizes then! Fingers crossed
I am from Holland, but I live in Switzerland for more than 3 years now. Haven’t had the opportunity to visit any of the three main prizes though, but I would love to.
Wowie! I have visited Switzerland before and can not wait to get back! I am from Washington state, USa.
I’m English and have been living in Zurich since May this year. I would love to win one of these fab prizes and can’t wait to read the book, as I very much enjoyed reading Swiss Watching as preparation for my move here.
I live in Switzerland.
I currently live in Zurich, but am from the US and Swiss Watching is a great book. It answered many questions and made sense of some I had not even reached yet…being here only 1.5 years! 🙂
Thanks! Look forward to reading the new book!
We moved to Switzerland last year from Scotland and are loving it here. Swiss Watching was in the Sonne hotel where we stayed before moving into our house. We think it’s very amusing and get all our guests to dip into it on their visits to us!
I really enjoyed the Slow Train book and learnt a lot more about Switzerland and its history. I’m in the UK but a Swiss prize could be used next year – it would be an excuse to come back to the “land of the giant train set”.
I’ve been living in Zürich since February, having come here from New Zealand — almost the opposite point on the globe! We have already had hordes of friends and family taking advantage of our hospitality to see Switzerland but we haven’t been to any of these places yet. Swiss Watching is the book I have on the bedside table for all our guests to read while they stay.
I’m based in the UK; that said I do love Switzerland and I’m definitely planning a return in 2014 🙂
I would love to win one of this fantastic prizes. I live in Germany, but I’m in Switzerland very often. I love it so much.
Keep your fingers crossed for me 🙂
Despite living in Switzerland for 4 years… I’ve never been to Jungfraujoch! Would love to win one of these great prizes!
We currently live in Zurich and recently made a trip to Interlaken, but only got up to Schynige Platte to view Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger. I read Swiss Watching before we moved here and found it extremely informative. Would love to have the chance to go to the top of Europe or any of the other Swiss prizes.
My husband and I live in Washington DC in the United States. We’re looking forward to visiting Switzerland in July 2014. Your books will give us a good introduction to that wonderful country.
I would loveeeeee to go to Switzerland again, I’ve been there before for couple of days and I absolutely loved it!, so much of that country to visit still and what a better oportunity then this one!.
Pls send me the good price!! :),
I would love one of these great prizes – I am originally from the USA but now living in Germany.
I live in the UK (Brighton), but I am half Swiss, and used to to Wengen when I was a child! I’d love to go back there!
Hi Mattia. I love Brighton! There are two book signings coming up not far from there: 13 November at Daunts Marylebone in London and 14 November at One Tree Books in Petersfield, Hampshire. See the Events page her for details.
Beautiful Jungfraujoch! I live in Italy
I’m from Switzerland and your books are a perfect gift for my German husband. Want to take him to the Jungfraujoch too!
Read about your book on the plane home from Switzerland. I had just spent 4 days hiking around Kleine Scheidegg. Fell in love with the mountains and can’t wait to go back. I’m from the United States.
Hi Caitlin. Was that in the BA High Life magazine? I have yet to see the finished article I wrote
I got to meet you this past weekend at the LEMAN EXPA FAIR in Lausanne. I got to listen to your presentation on how you embark on the historical train ride by following the daily diary of the English Lady.
I am from Canada and living in Grindelwald since July.
It was quite special for me to hear you talk about Interlaken and the Bernese Oberland. It is even more special because I have been married to a Swiss Man for over 15 years who is originally from Wengen.
When are you coming this way? If I have the pleasure to win your book I will be reading it with our children.
Hi Evelyn. I’m not sure when there will be events in the Oberland. Sometime soon I hope. There is a reading & signing at Stauffacher in Bern on 27 November but for that you need to contact the bookshop
I live in the United States and am traveling to Switzerland in May to visit family and travel, I would love to win a prize!
Hi Kurt. That means you could qualify for all the prizes!!
I have visited the Jungfrau region 11 times in the last two and half years and have a trip booked for February and will come again in July/August. It is the most amazing place, the mountains are so enchanting you get caught up in their mystery and the secrets they hold. I live in England and have travelled to various countries but Switzerland and the Jungfrau region are the best.
11 times! Wow that’s more than I have managed in the past 2.5 years
Have been to Switzerland a couple years ago and would love to return. I am in Maryland, USA.
I live int he USA but love Europe!!
Hi, I’m from South Africa. I am travelling to Switzerland for this Christmas and New Year with my husband and daughter as I’ve always wanted a White Christmas and finally my dream will come true. I would love to win one of the prizes. So hope to get hold of one of your books to read on the flight there. We will be staying in Interlaken 🙂
I live in Kentucky, in the USA.
I’m from the United States and was there 2 months ago and will be there again in May 2014 and stay a bit longer. There’s really nothing like the Swiss Alps. It’s so breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL!
Can’t wait to read this book!
As a Brit living in Switzerland for the past 4 years, I’d be happy with any of the prizes!
I’ve enjoyed both your previous books and the blog/website. Keep up the good work!
Would love to win any of these great prizes , I am from Australia 🙂
I am from the U.S.A. and had the amazing opportunity to visit this beautiful country back in the spring of 2008. Jungfrau was absolutely breath taking. I plan on one day taking my husband to visit. One of many items on his bucket list is to kiss me on Jungfrau and I cannot wait! Definitely a country I wish to go back to. =)
This past summer I was so surprised by my physical reaction at Jungfrau when I felt sick from the thin air. I’d never had anything like this happen before. I’d love to visit again and walk the path to the little house that I missed on the TOP OF THE WORLD!
Diccon, Swiss Watching was a terrific read! I do miss the jaw-droppingly beautiful country. I’m in Sydney, Australia. It would be great if more Australians looked at Switzerland as a holiday destination. They don’t know what they’re missing out on! Gosh why do I have to be so far away?!
I live in Switzerland and would love to win any of these prizes! I really enjoy reading all of your posts on Swiss Watching!
I live in Canton Geneve and am just finishing Swisswatching – a real delight to read!! A problem I’ve found on my daily train commute to work is that it’s on time far too much, so I arrive promptly and finishing books takes far longer than when periodically stuck for an hour or two on a train going nowhere in the UK. But for anyone who likes reading a seriously long book when on a train, the Adirondack from Montreal to New York is the one to go for: the track in upstate NY is just so bad that the trains have to crawl along and kids on bikes and even cows in the fields zoom past the dawdling trains. Can’t imagine it happening here …
Hi Diccon,
What a great website! I am Swiss born and live in London and would love to win a prize.I heard about you listening to BBC Radio 4and it made my day!
Hi Diccon. We met you last year at The House of Switzerland where you kindly signed my copy of Swiss Watching and enabled us to purchase Swisscellany both of which have been well read. We visit Switzerland twice a year and have a huge collection of Swiss souvenir items and books sourced from 2nd hand stores, the internet (& the odd Brockenhaus while we are on holiday). We stayed in Leukerbad last month and are coming back in May so would love any of your prizes please. I am currently reading ‘Slow Train to Switzerland’ along with a 1912 edition of ‘The Fascination Of Switzerland’ and am finding both very interesting. My husband is a member of The Swiss Railways Society in the UK and we regularly submit photos and sometimes articles. We always make full use our Swiss Passes on the fabulous trains, buses & boats etc. and leave the car parked up to have a Swiss holiday too! Keep up the good work. Best Wishes Heidi
What a super competition! I’m very much looking forward to your new book. I live in the UK and have had several hiking adventures in Switzerland – all of which have been enriched by a deeper understanding of the country gleaned from reading Swiss Watching, and of course your blog.
I would love to have an excuse to visit again.
I live in the US and have heard of your book Swiss Watching. Need to go buy the book! Adore Switzerland and would gladly go back in 2014!
I hope I will be able to come to the book signing in Zurich!!!!! Living in Switzerland and enjoying every moment of it!

I have your Swiss Watching book and am looking forward to the new one – I found Miss Jemima’s Swiss Journal in a secondhand bookshop a few month ago, it is fascinating! I live in Bath.
Switzerland is my favourite European country and I had my 17th. holiday there this year. 15 in the Summer months and two February holidays in the snow. Wonderful!
On five occasions I took parties of Girl Guides and we all had a wonderful time.
I hope to return before too long,.
I am from the USA, and a big fan of all things Swiss. I was probably one of the first Americans to read Swiss Watching 4 years ago as you personally sent me copy via your UK publisher before I made my first trip to Switzerland. Great book. Keep up the good work.
I live in the USA and would be totally pleased with Prize number 4!
Hi! My husband and I just moved to the Switz from Oregon. Someone from Swiss Customs actually sent me the link for your blog while we were corresponding about an issue we were having with getting a package through Customs. I’m glad he did! We love the outdoors and are excited to start exploring Switzerland with tips from your blog. Congrats on your book!
