Comfortable, chic and friendly. That’s what the hotel website promised me and I’m happy to report, that’s what I got. Not only that but also a spa, a garden and a view over the rooftops to Lago Maggiore. It’s not called the Hotel Belvedere for nothing

As nice as the lake view is, I preferred the tranquil garden behind the hotel, where you can relax on a lounger and look up at Madonna del Sasso church with Mt Cardada behind. Not forgetting the pool and spa that are right next to the garden. Very indulgent.

The comfy bedrooms are spread across three buildings but I’d definitely ask for one in the historic house, called Casa Sole, where rooms are a touch more stylish and inviting than those in the modern annexes. Prices are the same so it’s first come first served.

Breakfast was great, served in the chic restaurant or on the terrace if it’s sunny, as it often is in Locarno. There was a good choice from the buffet with hot food cooked to order, and the staff were friendlier and happier than anyone has a right to be early in the morning.

The big downside is the hilly location. Yes, that ensures the views but it is quite a hike up from the town centre. The hotel has a shuttle service and the funicular stops by the hotel, but if you like walking in Locarno (as I do), your legs might feel the strain. That’s what the spa is for!

I would definitely stay again although it’s over my normal price range for a hotel (especially if I were in an annex room). But you certainly get more than just a view. It’s relaxed, friendly, and has those little luxurious touches that make it memorable. I’ll be back.

Overall rating: 90%
- Best bits: lovely bedrooms, pool & spa, friendly staff.
- Worst bits: hilly location, annex rooms.
I stayed as a guest of Coop magazine but my single use of a double room would have cost from 189 francs including breakfast.
