Welcome to Little Switzerland!

There’s a new Swiss book out, and it’s one that I didn’t write! But I love it anyway: Swiss Miniatur. At first glance, all the pictures look like there are taken of a carefully constructed mini version of Switzerland, with everything exactly as it is in real life, just smaller. A Little Switzerland that really is a little Switzerland and not simply somewhere else in the world that reminded people of Swiss landscapes.
But look a little closer and you’ll see that these are photos of real scenes in Switzerland made to look as if they are on a miniature scale. Tilt-shift photography is the technical name. Or, as I like to call it, model railway perspective, which is particularly apt in this case. After all, Switzerland is the world’s most fantastic model railway set constructed on a human scale.
Swiss Miniatur is published by Helvetiq, makers of those fun Swiss board games and soon-to-be publishers of the French edition of Swiss Watching – coming next Spring!
