Swiss Watching at Expat Expo Zurich 2010

The little snow we had is melting, the birds are singing and the sun is shining. It must be spring in Switzerland. And that means that the first Expat Expo fair is just around the corner. This Sunday it starts in Zug (well, Cham actually) with 80 exhibitors and stands covering anything and everything to do with English-speaking life in Switzerland. And of course Swiss Watching will be there!

Never been to an Expat Expo? Even though it’s free entry? Then maybe it’s time to try it out. Despite the name, it’s not just for expats but for anyone who wants to get involved in English-speaking life – plenty of Swiss are there as exhibitors and visitors.

You can get down to business with English-speaking doctors, lawyers, dentists, relocation services and financial advisors. If that’s a bit heavy for a Sunday afternoon, then there are plenty of clubs to find out about: football, theatre groups, fishing, women’s groups, and even political parties. All in English. Plus face painting and a bouncy castle, apparently meant for the kids though I might be tempted. Then again, temptation is everywhere.

My favourite stands are the ones where you can buy the food you miss from home: Shropshire Blue cheese, proper bagels, HP sauce and crunchy peanut butter. Even crisps with flavours you might like (ie not paprika). I can never resist buying a jar of real chutney either.

So if you’re at a loose end this Sunday (10 April), come and say hello. I’ll be on stand 22 with Vicki, who has written and illustrated a wonderful children’s book about the bears of Bern. Signed copies of Swiss Watching will be on sale for 10% off the shop price, but if you already have a copy, just bring it along and I’ll sign it. Or if you want one as a gift, I can personalise a copy for you.

The fair runs from 11am to 5pm at the Lorensaal in Cham – all the details and directions here. If you can’t make the one in Zug, there are more Expos coming up in Basel (22 May), Zurich (4 September), Geneva (2 October) and Lucerne (6 November). Just visit the Expat Expo website for more information. And remember, they’re all free!

See you on Sunday.

Sounds like a fun event! If I were anywhere near there, I’d be game for going!

I have to confess, I was somewhat dragged along to the Expat Expo today (I had a bad experience at a family expo in Winti a couple of years back and haven’t quite recovered), but I had a really great time… It was lovely to meet and chat to you – and thanks for spending so much time fielding my ‘pick your brain’ questions about blogging. But what was really fascinating today, was discovering that there are so many entrepreneurial people here in Switzerland – I had no idea! I hope it was a successful event for you and your fellow exhibitors.

Hi Jo. Thanks for stopping by the stand today – very glad you were dragged along! It was great to chat, especially because it wasn’t entirely about the book which made a change. And it was successful, though the weather didn’t help. We need some clouds to bring in the crowds 🙂

If you’re ever in Bern, get in touch and we can carry on chatting.
